History of Nelson Cove

Some incomplete notes about the known history of Nelson Cove,

1853, March 3: U.S. Congress grants to the State of California "the sixteenth and thiry-sixth sections of each township in said State".

1878. Survey includes NE corner.

1897. Survey made of all 4 of the boundaries.

1917, May 22: Title to all except the NW 40 acress, with a fishing reservation to the state, granted to Harry C Scott, by the Governor.

1920, July 17: Title to the NW 40 acres, with a fishing reservation to the state, granted to D. E. Bertken, by the Governor.

1941: Property owned by Benjamin Jacobs.

1942, February 24: Federal Farm Mortage Corporation (a New Deal operation created in 1934 and abolished in 1961), transfers all of section 16 (plus some other stuff) to the Anglo California National Bank for $10, though reserving a half interest in minerals.

1956 (?): The Ponte family buys the ranch.

1961, July 10-12: Harlow fire ravages entire area.

1968, September 10: A Navy A-4 Skyhawk (from Lemoore) crashes at Nelson Cove, and causes a 500-acre fire. The pilot ejected safely but with major injuries.

1995 (?): Last fire on property on the Northern slope.

2001, March 26: First time Per and Nathan see the property.

2002, May 10: Close of escrow, bought by Per Bothner (60% share) and Peter Deutsch (40% share), from the Ponte family.

2005, December 13-14: Foundation of house poured.

2006, April 7: When a flatbed truck is stuck in mud on Stumpfield Mountain Road, blocking worker's trucks, an escapted convict steals one of the latter, almost side-swiping Per while passing. There is a major man-hunt - or rather woman-hunt. The truck is recoved near the Frog Pond, but without the thief - who Nathan startles in our kitchen trailer. We send her on her way; she is captured the next day.

2007, Jul 27: Fire further down on Stumpfield Mountain Road. They used an area on our property for command and staging.

2022, August 11 (recorded October 3): Per buys Peter's 40% share.

2022, August 20 (recorded October 3): Interspousal Transfer Deed converts to community property with right of survivorship by Per and Nathan.
