Pouring the foundation had been delayed a couple of times due to scheduling complications (Thanksgiving) and then weather concerns. But finally, we had a date. We drove up the day before.

had to leave.
As we were packing, we heard sounds of machinery, so perhaps they
got the smoothener machine
